Choosing arc flash PPE
Match the arc rating to the hazard
Each arc-rated garment carries an arc rating in cal/cm² (shown as ATPV or EBT). That rating must be at least as high as the incident energy worked out in the arc-flash risk assessment for the equipment being worked on. Low-energy tasks may only need an arc shirt and pants. High-energy switching needs a full suit with a switching hood or visor and arc gloves.
Layering
Everything worn under arc-rated clothing should be arc-rated or flame-retardant, or made of natural fibres. Synthetic fabrics can melt onto the skin. The range includes arc-rated T-shirts, boxer shorts and flame-retardant socks for this reason.
Arc gloves and insulating gloves are different
Arc switching gloves protect against the heat of an arc flash. Electrical insulating gloves (such as the Dromex Thor) protect against electric shock and are rated by voltage class. Leather over-gloves are worn over insulating gloves to protect the rubber from damage.
Frequently asked questions
What does "cal" mean on arc flash clothing?
It is the garment's arc rating in calories per square centimetre: the incident energy the fabric can take before the wearer is likely to suffer a second-degree burn. Higher numbers mean more protection.
Do you have ladies' arc suits?
Yes. A 15 cal ladies' arc suit is available as a full suit or jacket only.
