Choosing the right PPE

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, employers must identify the hazards in each job and provide suitable PPE where those hazards can't be removed. The points below cover the most common choices. If you are unsure, contact us with the task and the hazard, and we'll help you choose.

Dust masks: FFP1, FFP2 or FFP3?

Disposable dust masks are classed under EN 149 (adopted locally as SANS 50149). FFP1 filters at least 80% of airborne particles, FFP2 at least 94% and FFP3 at least 99%. FFP2 is the usual choice for fine dust such as cement, plaster and sanding dust. Silica-rich dust from cutting or grinding concrete, brick or stone needs FFP3 where your risk assessment calls for it. Dust masks do not protect against gases or vapours.

Half masks and filters

Reusable half masks take replaceable filters coded by hazard: A for organic vapours (brown), B for inorganic gases (grey), E for acid gases (yellow), K for ammonia (green) and P for particles (white). We stock Dromex Unifit A1, B1, ABEK1, P2 and P3 filters with matching single and twin half masks. Replace gas filters on the manufacturer's schedule, and immediately if you can smell or taste the contaminant.

Eye, head and hearing protection

  • Safety spectacles protect against flying particles. Goggles seal around the eyes against dust and splashes. Add a face shield for grinding or chemical decanting.
  • Hard hats protect against falling objects. Bump caps only protect against knocks on fixed objects such as pipes and racking, so they are not a substitute for a hard hat.
  • South Africa's noise regulations set 85 dB(A) as the limit for an eight-hour working day. Above that, wear foam or reusable earplugs or earmuffs, and make sure they are comfortable enough to be worn all shift.

Working at height

A fall-arrest system needs a full-body harness, a connecting lanyard or retractable fall arrester, and a suitable anchor point. Suspension intolerance (trauma) straps help a worker who has fallen to take pressure off their legs while they wait to be rescued.

Frequently asked questions

What does PPE include?

PPE (personal protective equipment) covers anything worn to protect against a workplace hazard: masks and respirators, eye and face protection, hard hats, hearing protection, harnesses, gloves, safety footwear, hi-vis and protective workwear and arc-flash clothing.

Is an FFP2 mask enough for spray painting?

No. FFP masks filter particles only. Solvent-based paints give off organic vapours, so you need a half mask with A-type filters, plus a P-type pre-filter for the spray mist.

Can I get PPE for a whole team or site?

Yes. Send us your list through a bulk quote request. Established businesses can also apply for a trade account on 30-day terms.
